Serpetta

Geh nur, aber diesmal

sollst du dir die Zähne ausbeißen!

Nardo

(Könnte ich doch

von ihr etwas erfahren.)

Serpetta

Glaubte doch

diese törichte Gärtnerin,

sie könnte allgemeine Verwirrung stiften,

indem sie sich als Edelfräulein ausgab:

Arminda hatte ganz recht,

sie fortschaffen zu lassen

an einen schwer zugänglichen Ort

hier im nahegelegenen Wald, in dem

es von wilden Tieren wimmelt, und vielleicht

frisst sie gerade ein hungriger Wolf.

Nardo

(Weh mir, was muss ich hören! Ich will sogleich

den Grafen davon in Kenntnis setzen… Arme Violante!)

Serpetta

Einerseits tut sie mir leid, andererseits aber

hat sie es sich selbst zuzuschreiben: und heutzutage

muss man diplomatisch sein, man muss sich verstellen

und diskret sein in Liebesdingen,

darf niemals sagen, wie einem ums Herz ist.

Nr.20 Arie

Serpetta

Wer die Welt genießen will,

der lasse sie, wie sie ist.

Ich errege mich über nichts,

ich nehme es, wie es kommt.

Ich weiß, ein Mädchen

sollte gutherzig sein,

ehrlich und offen;

doch das nützt nichts

bei den Männern heutzutage.

Man muss schlau sein,

sich gleichgültig zeigen,

die Sittsame mimen,

sich unwissend stellen,

muss zu schmeicheln wissen.

Als ich ein junges Mädchen war,

gab mir die Mutter diesen Rat,

und den will ich befolgen.

(geht ab)

15. Auftritt

Verlassene, unwirtliche Gegend mit teilweise eingestürzten

Aquädukten, dazwischen ein dunkler Höhleneingang.

Sandrina, furchtsam und zitternd; man sieht mehrere

Gestalten in großer Hast weglaufen, sie dort zurücklassend.

Scene 14

Serpetta; Nardo watching her from the side.

Serpetta

All right, all right! But this time

I’d like to pull your teeth out!

Nardo

(If I could

Get something out of her!)

Serpetta

She thought,

That silly gardener’s girl,

That by passing herself off as a lady

She would throw everything into confusion:

Arminda was quite right

To have her taken away

To a remote place

In the woods near here

That’s full of horrible beasts; maybe right now

Some famished wolf is devouring her.

Nardo

(Heavens, what do I hear? I must tell the Count

This very moment . . . Poor Violante!)

(Exit in haste.)

Serpetta

On the one hand, I’m sorry for her; but on the other,

She was asking for it! And nowadays

You have to be a politician, to know how to feign

And practise discretion in love,

Without ever saying what you feel in your heart.

No.20. Aria

Serpetta

She who wants to enjoy the world

Must leave it as she finds it.

I don’t let anything bother me,

I take things as they come.

I know that a girl

Ought to have a good heart,

And be sincere and honest;

But that’s no use at all

With men as they are nowadays.

You have to be crafty,

Show that you’re indifferent,

Feign modesty,

Play the slyboots,

And know how to flatter them.

When I was still a little girl

Mother gave me that advice,

Scene 15

A deserted, hilly place, with half-ruined ancient aqueducts, in

the middle of which lies the opening to a dark cave.

Sandrina, frightened and trembling; we see several people

who have abandoned her running off quickly.

Scena quattordicesima

Serpetta e Nardo in osservazione.

Serpetta

Va’ pur, ma questa volta

ti strapperei li denti.

Nardo

(Potessi da costei

ricavar qualche cosa.)

Serpetta

Si credeva

la sciocca giardiniera

con spacciarsi una dama

metter tutti in scompiglio:

e Arminda con ragione

l’ha fatta trasportare

in un luogo remoto

qui nel bosco vicino,

pieno d’animalacci e forse adesso

qualche lupo affamato la divora.

Nardo

(Oimè che sento! Al Conte in quest’istante

vado a svelar... povera Violante!)

(parte in fretta)

Serpetta

Da una parte mi spiace, ma dall’altra

se l’è andata cercando: ed oggigiorno

politica ci vuol, bisogna fingere

ed usar secretezza nell’amore,

né dir giammai, quel che serbiam nel core.

16 | No.20 Aria

Serpetta

Chi vuol godere il mondo

lo lasci come sta.

Di niente mi confondo,

lo prendo come va.

Lo so che una fanciulla

dev’esser di buon cuore,

andar sincera e schietta;

ma ciò non serve a nulla

cogl’uomini oggidì.

Bisogna esser accorta,

mostrarsi indifferente,

finger la modestina,

fare la gattamorta,

saperli lusingar.

Quand’ero ancor fanciulla

mamma mi diè la scuola,

la voglio seguitar.

17 | Scena quindicesima

Luogo deserto ed alpestre di antichi acquedotti in parte

rovinati fra’ quali vi è una grotta oscura praticabile.

Sandrina timorosa e tremante, nell’atto che si vedono

precipitosamente fuggire diverse Persone che l’hanno

ivi lasciata.

Scène 14

Serpetta, Nardo en observation.

Serpetta

Va, va ! mais cette fois,

J’aimerais te casser les dents !

Nardo

(Si je pouvais

Tirer quelque chose d’elle.)

Serpetta

Elle croyait,

Cette sotte de jardinière,

En se faisant passer pour une dame,

Mettre tout le monde en émoi :

C’est à bon droit qu’Arminda

L’a fait transporter

Dans un lieu écarté,

Là-bas, dans la proche forêt,

Pleine d’affreuses bêtes, et peut-être à présent

Quelque loup affamé est-il en train de la dévorer.

Nardo

(Ciel ! Qu’entends-je ? Au Comte sur-le-champ

Il faut apprendre… Pauvre Violante !)

(Il sort précipitamment.)

Serpetta

D’un côté, cela me chagrine, mais de l’autre,

Elle l’a bien cherché ! Et de nos jours

Il faut être un fin politique, savoir feindre,

Et en amour user de discrétion,

Sans révéler jamais ce qu’on a dans le cœur.

N°20. Air

Serpetta

Qui veut jouir du monde

Qu’il le laisse aller comme il va.

De rien je ne me trouble,

Je le prends comme il vient.

Je sais bien qu’une fille

Doit avoir un bon cœur,

Être franche et sincère ;

Mais de nos jours, avec les hommes,

Cela ne sert de rien.

Il faut être finaude,

Faire l’indifférente,

Feindre la modestie,

Jouer la chattemite

Et savoir les flatter.

Lorsque j’étais fillette,

Maman m’apprit cela,

Et je suis ses leçons.

(Elle sort.)

Scène 15

Un lieu désert et montagneux, avec d’anciens aqueducs en

partie en ruines, au milieu desquels s’ouvre l’accès à une

grotte.

Sandrina, apeurée et tremblante ; on voit s’enfuir

précipitamment plusieurs personnes qui l’ont abandonnée.




